Moss Stitch Scarf
This moss stitch scarf is a great beginner project as the scarf is worked flat with straight knitting needles and uses just two basic stitches; knit and purl.
Moss stitch is perfect for scarves as the pattern has no ‘wrong’ side so the scarf will be the same on the front and back. The moss stitch pattern will also prevent the edges of the scarf from rolling up and will leave you with a nice neat scarf.
Tension & Sizes
Using the moss stitch pattern you should have 7 stitches by 12 rows in a 4” (10cm) square. If you find that your knit is a little too tight try using 15mm knitting needles.
The size of the scarf is easily tailored to your needs. To adjust the width of the scarf reduce or increase the number of stitches that you cast on. To adjust the length of the scarf work as many rows as you like until you have reached your desired length.
This pattern gives instructions to make a scarf approximately 8” (20cm) wide and 80” (200cm) long.
Pattern
Step 1: Cast on 12 stitches, you can find a Guide to Casting On here. Work in moss stitch as follows:
Row 1: (K1, P1), repeat to the end of the row
Row 2: (K1, P1), repeat to the end of the row
Repeat Row 1 & 2 until you have the desired length or until you have 20” (50cm) of wool left
Step 2: Bind off in the moss stitch pattern as follows:
Step 1: K1, P1, slip first stitch over second, one stitch remaining on the right hand needle (RHN)
Step 2: K1, slip first stitch over second, one stitch remaining on the RHN
Step 3: P1, slip first stitch over second, one stitch remaining on the RHN
Repeat steps 2 & 3 until there is just one stitch remaining. You can find my Guide to Binding Off here.
Cut the yarn and thread this through the final stitch to secure. Use your blunt needle to weave in all of the loose ends and trim any stray threads.
I hope that you enjoy this pattern and you are able to produce something excellent! If you are unsure about anything mentioned in the pattern or any of my posts please get in touch, I would love to hear from you.
Happy knitting, SJ.
